Open-Top Glass Washers
By
salesnt P. Sadlek
While many in the glass industry are familiar with horizontal flat glass washers,
they often do not realize the many
advantages that a well-built, vertical open-top flat glass washer offers.
American Glass
Equipment s open-top glass washer is manufactured in 46-, 60- and 72-inch versions
(the 84- and 96-inch machines are closed-top designs) with two, four six or
eight brushes The working height is a comfortable 30 inches from the floor
though it can be set at a lower height to correspond with the working height of
Peter Lisec and Lenhardt 10 lines.
The vertical glass
washer also comes equipped with heavy-duty manual or motorized in/out
conveyors. Other features include:
Cost savings:
The VGW6O-4 model costs less than $20,000. It is more versatile than 84- or
96-inch horizontal
flat glass washers (which may cost three
to four times as much), and one employee can wash larger glass.
Stainless steel
components: Heavy-
duty steel tubing is
used in the frame-work, and top-quality
stainless steel is used in all the wet areas, including the brush shafts, conveyor
and drive shafts; heavy-duty water tank; high-performance water
pumps; non-lube hearings: solid main beam; and all brush covers, rinse
covers, top and side panels and four easily
rernovable sliding doors.
Sound
control: with the total sound control
system in place, the vertical glass
washer operates at approximately 70
decibels, well below the acceptable limit.
Additional
features: A solenoid water-saver
package and/or a heavy-duty inspection light package is available. The vertical
glass washer is equipped with low-B, 12-inch-long segmented nylon brush segments
mounted on plastic cores. These can be rotated easily to extend the life of the
brushes. A low-water-level safety switch protects the water hearer from burnout.
The wash water is heated by a heavy-duty1 thermostatically
controlled water immersion heater and is recirculated to save water. The first
rinse section is also recirculated water.
Versatility:
The
vertical glass washer is capable of washing glass in thicknesses
from 1/16 through 1/2 inch without any adjustment. It will wash glass as small
as 2 by 10 inches arid as large as 120 by 120 inches.
Ease of
installation: The vertical glass washer is delivered in just three pieces--the
main body (which is already tilted to the correct angle) and two conveyors
(which are easily installed and automatically aligned).
Ease of
operation: The operating push-pull buttons are
located on the front of the washer, at an easily accessible height. These are
lighted but-tons with one for each function, including a lighted Emergency
"STOP" button. The watertight control panel contains all UL-approved Allen-Bradley
controls.
Ease of
maintenance: All of the motors and electronics are
accessible outside of the washer's main
body away from water and steam. The
sliding stainless steel doors are quickly and
easily removed, exposing the entire inside of the glass washer for inspection
and maintenance when necessary. The conveyor wheels inside the glass washer can
be removed by simply lifting them out of their stain-less steel brackets.
Likewise, the conveyor wheels outside the glass washer are also easily
removed- The gears are non-lube nylon.
